Bridgetown International University is a medical school in Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, offering a US-style Doctor of Medicine (MD) in English. It is the one institution we recommend in Barbados, and the model differs from the Georgia and Central Asia routes: the curriculum resembles US and UK medical schools, which makes it a fit for students who specifically want a Caribbean, internationally oriented pathway with a clear line toward the USMLE.

Why Bridgetown stands apart
Provisionally accredited by CAAM-HP (the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Medicine), 2025–2027
Carries an ECFMG sponsor note — graduates from 2025 onward are eligible to apply for ECFMG certification, the gateway to the USMLE and US residency
Listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS)
Two MD tracks: a 5.5-year programme (1.5-yr pre-medical + 2-yr basic sciences + 2-yr clinical) after 10+2, or a 4-year graduate-entry track for students who already hold a relevant Bachelor's degree
US-based curriculum taught entirely in English, in a stable Commonwealth country
Recognition & NMC eligibility
Bridgetown International University is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), the directory the NMC checks for the foreign-degree route. As with any foreign medical degree, an Indian student must be NEET-qualified and hold an NMC eligibility certificate before travelling to keep the FMGE/NEXT route open — and BIU's own entry requirement is at least 65% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a minimum age of 18. Because the curriculum and the school's ECFMG sponsor note point strongly toward the US (USMLE) and UK (PLAB) pathways, we talk through which route — India or abroad — you are aiming for before you apply.
Choosing your pathway: India (FMGE) vs USA (USMLE)
This is the most important thing to settle before you apply, because it shapes which version of the programme you take. The NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021 require that, to be eligible to practise in India, your entire course and the 12-month internship are completed at the same foreign medical institution, in the country where the university is based — split or multi-country training can break that condition. BIU's model includes clinical rotations in the USA, Canada, India and the Caribbean, and the page above describes a US/USMLE pathway; that US-rotation route points toward US licensure (USMLE), not the Indian FMGE route. So if your goal is to practise in India, you should take the in-country, single-institution track and confirm that your specific programme keeps all of your training at BIU in Barbados, because foreign or split rotations can affect NMC/FMGE eligibility. If your goal is the USA, the USMLE pathway is the one to build around. We map the right track to your goal for each student before any fee is paid.
Fees & total cost
BIU charges tuition by the trimester rather than by the year. The pre-medical phase runs at about $3,335 per trimester across four trimesters, and the basic-sciences phase at about $3,335 per trimester across six trimesters; clinical-phase fees vary by rotation and site. On top of tuition there is a one-time $5,000 acceptance fee payable on admission. Barbados is a comparatively expensive place to live, so the living budget is a real part of the total cost — we set out the full trimester-by-trimester breakdown, the acceptance fee and a realistic monthly living estimate for you before you commit.

Campus & student life
English is the official national language of Barbados, so there is genuinely no language barrier — a real advantage over the Russian- or Georgian-speaking destinations, where day-to-day life and hospital wards run in another tongue. The island is a safe, stable Commonwealth country with a warm tropical climate all year (roughly 24 to 31°C, no winter), and an Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November. The trade-offs are honest ones: it is a long journey from India — about 22 to 25 hours or more through a London, US or Gulf hub, with no direct flight — and living costs are high at around $1,500 to $1,900 a month. The Indian community is small, so students largely self-cater. Our team helps with the application, visa and the practical side of settling in.

Bridgetown International University — common questions
How is Bridgetown International different from the Georgia or Kyrgyzstan route?
The US-style curriculum and the school's ECFMG sponsor note point toward US/UK pathways (USMLE, PLAB), and tuition is higher. The Georgia and Central Asia routes are lower-cost programmes geared mainly to returning and clearing the FMGE/NEXT. We help you choose based on your goals.
Is there really a 4-year MD option?
Yes — but it is a graduate-entry track for students who already hold a relevant Bachelor's degree (or have completed the pre-medical phase). A student entering straight after 10+2 takes the 5.5-year programme, which begins with a 1.5-year pre-medical phase.
Is Bridgetown International recognised in India?
It is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, so graduates can attempt the FMGE/NEXT screening test once they meet the NMC eligibility conditions — a valid NEET score and an NMC eligibility certificate. We verify this for your profile first.
Will a BIU degree let me practise in India?
It can, but the route matters. Under the NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021, a graduate is eligible for the Indian licence only if the whole course and the 12-month internship are completed at the same institution in the country where it is based. BIU also offers clinical rotations in the USA, Canada, India and the Caribbean, and a US/USMLE pathway — that US route is built for US licensure, not the Indian FMGE route. If India is your goal, you take the in-country, single-institution track at BIU in Barbados and then sit the FMGE/NEXT screening test once you meet the NMC eligibility conditions. We confirm that your programme keeps all training in Barbados and map the route to your goal before you apply.
What language is the programme taught in?
English throughout — Barbados is an English-speaking country, so there is no language barrier.
