About Kyrgyz State Medical Academy

The I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (KSMA) — often searched for as "Kyrgyz State Medical University" — was founded in 1939 and is the oldest and best-known government medical institution in Bishkek. For Indian applicants it pairs more than eight decades of state-academy credibility with an English-medium programme, and its size means a broad set of affiliated hospitals for the clinical years. Students who would rather study at an established state institution than a newer private school often put it on their shortlist.

By the numbers

Founded 1939; reorganised as an Academy in 1996, named after I.K. Akhunbaev in 2008
1,637 foreign students from 17 countries study in the English-medium faculties
140 teaching staff, including 9 professors and 39 associate professors
Two dedicated English-medium General Medicine faculties for international students
A government (state) medical academy with a broad Bishkek hospital network

Recognition & NMC eligibility

Listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy keeps the standard Indian pathway open: clear NEET with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories), obtain your NMC eligibility certificate before travelling, complete the degree, and you are eligible to sit the FMGE/NEXT and register with the National Medical Commission — or take the USMLE/PLAB route abroad. We confirm the academy still meets the NMC's current rules at the time you apply — including the course-duration requirement — not just in general terms.

Fees & cost of living

KSMA is a government academy, and its official tuition is set in local currency. The last published figure we have is roughly $2,700 a year from 2020–21, while current aggregator listings put it closer to $4,200 a year — so plan for approximately $2,700 to $4,200 per year, and we confirm the exact, current figure with the academy for your intake before you commit. Living in Bishkek is among the most affordable of any of our destinations, with most students managing on roughly $250 to $400 a month for hostel, food and day-to-day costs. We give you an all-in estimate rather than tuition alone.

How admission works at KSMA

Apply with your documents — passport, Class 10 and 12 marksheets, NEET scorecard, 3×4 and 4×6 photos, a medical/HIV certificate and notarized translations
Document screening — the academy reviews your file and eligibility
Conditional admission, then an official invitation letter issued once the host Ministry confirms your enrolment
Apply for the Kyrgyz student ('S') visa or e-visa on that invitation
Travel to Bishkek and complete on-campus registration
Files are typically accepted between July and October for the September intake
NEET is the NMC's requirement for anyone who wants to practise in India, so we apply it for everyone

Campus & student life

Bishkek is a compact Central Asian capital with a large, settled South-Asian student community, so the everyday things — hostels, food, getting around — are well-trodden ground. There is a direct Delhi-to-Bishkek flight of about 3 hours 20 minutes. The climate is continental, with winters around −8°C and summers near 31°C, and the city is generally safe. Russian is the everyday language and street English is limited, so we help with the early settling-in. The academy's state status and long history mean an established campus rather than a brand-new build, and living costs are among the lowest of any destination at roughly $250 to $400 a month. Our local coordinator manages airport pickup, accommodation and registration, and stays reachable through the year.

Kyrgyz State Medical Academy — common questions

Is it a "University" or an "Academy"?
Officially it is the I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (KSMA) — a state (government) medical academy in Bishkek. It is widely searched for as "Kyrgyz State Medical University," but Academy is the correct name.
Is it recognised for practising in India?
It is WDOMS-listed, so graduates can attempt the FMGE/NEXT screening test once they meet the NMC eligibility conditions — a valid NEET score and an NMC eligibility certificate. We verify this for you first.
What language is the programme taught in?
English, for international students, in dedicated English-medium General Medicine faculties.
If a long-established state academy appeals to you, book a free counselling call and we will check your eligibility, confirm the latest fees and course structure with the Academy, and outline the September admission steps.
